Recognizing the cultural resonance and accessibility of the popular form of karaoke, the collective Weird Allan Kaprow experiments with repurposing pop melodies as vehicles for new narratives, and facilitating moments of collective catharsis through the mocking of power. WAK’s most recent work, “Karaoking Portland,” collaborated with local artists and community organizers to create 11 songs in 11 days. “Karaoking Portland” tells narratives counter to the dominant representation of Portland in popular media—a portrayal plush with microbrews, bikes, and boutiques. The collective’s first project was “Karaoking the Museum,” which tells the material and social and political history of artwork on display at the Portland Art Museum.
