DESCRIPTION:Every First Thursday\, we open our doors to the community: whether you're just strolling by\, headed to a gallery down the street\, or here for a show\, come on in and join us for local music\, snacks a-plenty\, and a complimentary beer from our neighbors over at Deschutes.\n\nIn February\, we're hosting local R&B artist Blossom for a performance of her unique neo-soul style voice. With roots in Trinidad & Tobago\, Blossom is fulfilling her namesake by blooming in Portland's music scene\, and developing into a unique songstress.\n\nFrom 5:30 - 6 p.m.\, we'll open our doors and let you take a sneak peak at our world premiere production of Astoria: Part One. Some of our production staff will be on-hand to give you tours of the stage and answer any and all of your questions.

SUMMARY:Discover Jazz: The Political Implications of "Sonny's Blues"
DESCRIPTION:PDX Jazz is proud to present the third program in its adult education series\, Discover Jazz.  This free event\, titled “The Political Implications of James Baldwin’s Jazz Short Story Sonny’s Blues\,” will be held at the offices of Literary Arts\, at 925 SW Washington Street.\n\nReed College Professor and PDX Jazz Board Member Pancho Savery will host the evening’s events\, including a lecture\, recorded music\, and discussion.  In this presentation\, Mr. Savery will focus on James Baldwin’s classic short story “Sonny’s Blues\,” which pits two brothers against each other.  The older one\, unnamed\, is a straight-laced vet who is now a married math teacher; and his younger brother\, Sonny\, a recovering drug addict\, is a jazz piano player. What does it mean that one brother’s idea of jazz is Louis Armstrong\, and the other’s is Charlie Parker?  How much\, if any\, does this difference make\, and does this difference have any political implications?\n\nThis event is free to the public on a first-come\, first-served seating basis.  Wine and food will be available.
